Daniil Medvedev will, of course, headline the tournament with a chance to play Richard Gasquet, whom the Geneva public will be able to see for the first time. The tournament could then offer us a quarter-final between the world number 2 and Dominic Thiem, the last two winners of the US Open.

Despite the absence of Stan Wawrinka due to an injury sustained in his  match against Novak Djokovic in Rome on Thursday night, there is one Swiss player in the main draw of the Gonet Geneva Open. Leandro Riedi, a finalist in the 2020 French Open junior draw ahead of Dominic Stricker, has received a wild card from the organisers. The 20-year-old from Zurich is the great hope of Swiss tennis, just like Dominic Stricker. He will open the tournament against a qualifier with the ambition of doing as well as the Bernese who reached the quarter-finals last year.

The first round will feature three great matches: Richard Gasquet and Australian John Milman, a player who always sells his skin very dearly, will be worth a visit, as will the duel between Fabio Fognini and Australian Thanasi Kokkinakis, who has returned to the forefront. Finally, Benoît Paire will meet Finnish Emil Ruusuvuori to challenge defending champion Casper Ruud in the round of 16.

The Gonet Geneva Open will start on Saturday at 11am with the first round of qualifying. Four Swiss players will be in the running, Henri Laaksonen, Johan Nikles, Jakub Paul and Damien Wenger.

The first of the three wild cards for the Gonet Geneva Open has been awarded to Daniil Medvedev. The world No. 2 will make his return to Geneva after undergoing surgery last month to treat a hernia. The Gonet Geneva Open will take place from May 14 to 21 on the courts of the TC Genève at the Parc des Eaux-Vives.

A finalist this year at the Australian Open against Rafael Nadal in a match that will make history, the Russian became the 27th world No. 1 in history on February 22. Daniil Medvedev is 26 years old and has 13 titles to his credit. He has been a Grand Slam winner since his success last year at the US Open. Prior to his triumph in New York, he won the 2020 Masters in London.

With Daniil Medvedev, defending champion Casper Ruud (ATP 7) and 2021 finalist Denis Shapovalov (ATP 16), the Gonet Geneva Open will feature three of the most iconic players of the next generation. Dominic Thiem, another US Open winner, will also be present at the Parc des Eaux-Vives. In addition, the organizers hope to attract two other top players in the coming days

The entry list of the Gonet Geneva Open, which will take place from May the 14th to May the 21st on the courts of the Tennis Club of Geneva, is full of promise. It includes five of the world’s top 20 players and a Grand Slam winner in the person of Dominic Thiem.

Crowned at the 2020 US Open, the Austrian will be present for the first time in the enchanting setting of the Parc des Eaux-Vives. After injuring his wrist for many months before being weakened by Covid-19, Dominic Thiem is aiming to return to the level that enabled him to reach the third place in the ATP rankings two years ago. It will be recalled that he was a finalist twice at Roland Garros against Rafael Nadal, in 2018 and in 2019.

Dominic Thiem will not be the only headliner of the seventh edition of the Gonet Geneva Open. Defending champion Casper Ruud (ATP 7) will once again be in attendance, as will his unfortunate opponent in the final Denis Shapovalov (ATP 16). The Norwegian and the Canadian will be joined by three other members of the top 20, American Reilly Opelka (ATP 17) who has already won two tournaments in 2022 in Dallas and Houston, Spanish Roberto Bautista Agut (ATP 18), who won this year in Doha, and Georgian Nikoloz Basilashvili (ATP 20), who reached the final at the Indian Wells Masters 1000 last year.

With the presence of Benoît Paire (ATP 61) and Fabio Fognini (ATP 62), two of the most “volcanic” players on the Tour, the draw should please all tennis fans. In addition, other top players are expected to attend thanks to the three invitations extended to the organizers. In recent years, Stan Wawrinka, Alexander Zverev, Grigor Dimitrov and Kei Nishikori have all received wild cards at the last minute to play the tournament, which last year had the honor of being able to count on the presence of Roger Federer

Entry list of the Gonet Geneva Open:

Ruud and Shapovalov: the return of the finalists

The 2022 edition of the Gonet Geneva Open is launched. At the Palais Eynard, the tournament director Thierry Grin unveiled the main features of this seventh edition. It will include the two finalists of last year, Casper Ruud and Denis Shapovalov.

The announcement of the presence of the Norwegian, title holder, and the Canadian was not the only good news of the day. The Gonet Geneva Open also announced the renewal of its agreement with the City of Geneva until 2025, and the arrival of a new sponsor, the Groupe Vaudoise. The support of the City of Geneva and the Groupe Vaudoise demonstrates that the tournament has become an established event and continues to grow.

Finally, the Gonet Geneva Open has chosen the Fondation Pacifique as its partner of choice for this 2022 edition. It contributes to a better understanding of the human impact on the oceans thanks to expeditions on two sailing boats, the Fleur de Passion and the Mauritius.

Thierry Grin was keen to point out that, as every year, other top players will be part of the event. The goodwill of promoters Ion Tiriac and Rainer Schüttler and the proximity of the French Open have allowed the Gonet Geneva Open to host players such as Roger Federer, Alexander Zverev and Grigor Dimitrov in the past.

Two-time winner of the tournament in 2016 and 2017, Stan Wawrinka will of course be welcome to return to Geneva. A wild card will be reserved for him if he changes his mind about not competing during the week of the tournament.

Marc Rosset, Sports Director of the Gonet Geneva Open, has also confirmed that the traditional pre-qualifying tournament will be held in Biel. Organized by Swiss Tennis, it will determine which Swiss player will receive a wild card into the qualifying draw.

Dominic Stricker: the hoped confirmation

Dominic Stricker: the hoped confirmation

Dominic Stricker: the hoped confirmation

The adventure continues for Dominic Stricker (ATP 419). The day after his victory over Marin Cilic, the Bernese won 7-5 6-4 over Marton Fucsovics (ATP 44) to reach the quarterfinals of the Gonet Geneva Open.

This Thursday, Dominic Stricker will have the opportunity to avenge his loss to… Roger Federer with his match against Pablo Andujar (ATP 75). Even though the Valencian metronome showed all his bravery on Tuesday against the man with twenty Grand Slam titles, Dominic Stricker is not starting out defeated. The Bernese can, in fact, make lightning flash from his left arm. Against Marton Fuscovics, who won this tournament three years ago, he was able to dictate the match with his forehand and his lightning-fast backhand.

In this match, which was interrupted twice due to rain, Dominic Stricker showed remarkable nervous control. His composure in the “money time” contrasted with the feverishness of the Hungarian who lost both sets on two double faults. “I was able to stay calm,” the Berneseman rightly emphasized.

Dominik Stricker, who reached the quarter-finals of his first ATP Tour tournament two months after winning the Lugano Challenger, is following in the footsteps of Marc Rosset. In 1989, the Geneva won the title at the age of 18 at the Parc des Eaux-Vives to launch a career that was magnificent. “There are still some very good players in the field”, says Dominic Stricker when asked if the feat is possible. The road is, it is true, still long but Dominic Sricker wants to believe that he can follow it to the end.
