Ruud and Shapovalov: the return of the finalists

The 2022 edition of the Gonet Geneva Open is launched. At the Palais Eynard, the tournament director Thierry Grin unveiled the main features of this seventh edition. It will include the two finalists of last year, Casper Ruud and Denis Shapovalov.

The announcement of the presence of the Norwegian, title holder, and the Canadian was not the only good news of the day. The Gonet Geneva Open also announced the renewal of its agreement with the City of Geneva until 2025, and the arrival of a new sponsor, the Groupe Vaudoise. The support of the City of Geneva and the Groupe Vaudoise demonstrates that the tournament has become an established event and continues to grow.

Finally, the Gonet Geneva Open has chosen the Fondation Pacifique as its partner of choice for this 2022 edition. It contributes to a better understanding of the human impact on the oceans thanks to expeditions on two sailing boats, the Fleur de Passion and the Mauritius.

Thierry Grin was keen to point out that, as every year, other top players will be part of the event. The goodwill of promoters Ion Tiriac and Rainer Schüttler and the proximity of the French Open have allowed the Gonet Geneva Open to host players such as Roger Federer, Alexander Zverev and Grigor Dimitrov in the past.

Two-time winner of the tournament in 2016 and 2017, Stan Wawrinka will of course be welcome to return to Geneva. A wild card will be reserved for him if he changes his mind about not competing during the week of the tournament.

Marc Rosset, Sports Director of the Gonet Geneva Open, has also confirmed that the traditional pre-qualifying tournament will be held in Biel. Organized by Swiss Tennis, it will determine which Swiss player will receive a wild card into the qualifying draw.

Roger Federer, Stan Wawrinka, Marin Cilic, three Grand Slam winners, Alexander Zverev, Grigor Dimitrov, David Ferrer, Kevin Anderson, Kei Nishikori, John Isner and Fabio Fognini are some of the great players who have played on the clay courts of the Tennis Club de Genève during the GONET GENEVA OPEN. Casper Ruud: absolute mastery

Casper Ruud: absolute mastery

Casper Ruud: absolute mastery

The 2021 edition of the Gonet Geneva Open crowned Casper Ruud (ATP 21). The 22-year-old Norwegian won 7-6 (8/6) 6-4 in the final against Denis Shapovalov (ATP 15). He wins the second title of his career fifteen months after his success in Buenos Aires.

Favourite of the bookmakers, Casper Ruud did not concede a single break point against the Canadian, as he did in the semi-final the day before against Pablo Andujar. This statistic alone shows the absolute mastery of a player who had just reached the semi-finals of two Masters 1000 tournaments, in Monte Carlo and Madrid.

This success at the Gonet Geneva Open ensures that Casper Ruud moves up five places in the next ATP rankings. It also earns him the label of the great outsider at the next French Open. In Paris, no player will like to rub shoulders with the Oslo native who is developing a formidable game on clay after training with Rafael Nadal in Majorca. His forehand is becoming an absolute weapon.

With the titles of Casper Ruud in singles and the duo of Australian John Peers and New Zealander Michael Venus in doubles, the book for the 2021 edition of the Gonet Geneva Open has been closed in fine fashion. Despite the limited capacity of 100 spectators and the often unfavorable weather, the tournament was a success. The presence of Roger Federer and the exploits of Dominic Stricker have, of course, fed the chronicle of an event called to grow even more. The appointment is therefore made for 2022.

A sumptuous final

A sumptuous final

The Gonet Geneva Open 2021 has a final that promises to be sumptuous. It will oppose this Saturday at 4pm Casper Ruud (ATP 21) and Denis Shapovalov (ATP 15) for a very undecided confrontation.

The Norwegian and the Canadian have never faced each other before. The No. 3 and No. 2 seeds in the draw will arrive perfectly “launched” for this first duel. Caspar Ruud is coming off two semifinal appearances in the last two Masters 1000 tournaments in which he participated, in Monte-Carlo and Madrid. As for Denis Shapovalov, no one can ignore the fact that he had two match points in Rome last week against the future winner Rafael Nadal.

Both men delivered perfectly in the semifinals. Casper Ruud won comfortably 6-3 6-2 over Pablo Andujar (ATP 75). The Valencian was the “executioner” of Roger Federer and Dominic Stricker on his way to the semifinals, but was unable to control his opponent’s forehand. He did not have a single break point in the eight games he played.

Denis Shapovalov’s task was not as easy. Against Pablo Cuevas (ATP 102), the left-hander really had to work hard to win 6-4 7-5. The Uruguayan had his chance in both sets before giving in to an opponent who seems to be on a mission this week on the TC Geneva courts. The Canadian intends to win the Gonet Geneva Open to pick up a second title after his success in 2019 in Stockholm. His problem is that Casper Ruud has the same ambition: to add a second line to his prize list after his victory in Buenos Aires in 2020.
