Daniil Medvedev at the Gonet Geneva Open

The first of the three wild cards for the Gonet Geneva Open has been awarded to Daniil Medvedev. The world No. 2 will make his return to Geneva after undergoing surgery last month to treat a hernia. The Gonet Geneva Open will take place from May 14 to 21 on the courts of the TC Genève at the Parc des Eaux-Vives.

A finalist this year at the Australian Open against Rafael Nadal in a match that will make history, the Russian became the 27th world No. 1 in history on February 22. Daniil Medvedev is 26 years old and has 13 titles to his credit. He has been a Grand Slam winner since his success last year at the US Open. Prior to his triumph in New York, he won the 2020 Masters in London.

With Daniil Medvedev, defending champion Casper Ruud (ATP 7) and 2021 finalist Denis Shapovalov (ATP 16), the Gonet Geneva Open will feature three of the most iconic players of the next generation. Dominic Thiem, another US Open winner, will also be present at the Parc des Eaux-Vives. In addition, the organizers hope to attract two other top players in the coming days

The entry list of the Gonet Geneva Open, which will take place from May the 14th to May the 21st on the courts of the Tennis Club of Geneva, is full of promise. It includes five of the world’s top 20 players and a Grand Slam winner in the person of Dominic Thiem.

Crowned at the 2020 US Open, the Austrian will be present for the first time in the enchanting setting of the Parc des Eaux-Vives. After injuring his wrist for many months before being weakened by Covid-19, Dominic Thiem is aiming to return to the level that enabled him to reach the third place in the ATP rankings two years ago. It will be recalled that he was a finalist twice at Roland Garros against Rafael Nadal, in 2018 and in 2019.

Dominic Thiem will not be the only headliner of the seventh edition of the Gonet Geneva Open. Defending champion Casper Ruud (ATP 7) will once again be in attendance, as will his unfortunate opponent in the final Denis Shapovalov (ATP 16). The Norwegian and the Canadian will be joined by three other members of the top 20, American Reilly Opelka (ATP 17) who has already won two tournaments in 2022 in Dallas and Houston, Spanish Roberto Bautista Agut (ATP 18), who won this year in Doha, and Georgian Nikoloz Basilashvili (ATP 20), who reached the final at the Indian Wells Masters 1000 last year.

With the presence of Benoît Paire (ATP 61) and Fabio Fognini (ATP 62), two of the most “volcanic” players on the Tour, the draw should please all tennis fans. In addition, other top players are expected to attend thanks to the three invitations extended to the organizers. In recent years, Stan Wawrinka, Alexander Zverev, Grigor Dimitrov and Kei Nishikori have all received wild cards at the last minute to play the tournament, which last year had the honor of being able to count on the presence of Roger Federer

Entry list of the Gonet Geneva Open:

Ruud and Shapovalov: the return of the finalists

The 2022 edition of the Gonet Geneva Open is launched. At the Palais Eynard, the tournament director Thierry Grin unveiled the main features of this seventh edition. It will include the two finalists of last year, Casper Ruud and Denis Shapovalov.

The announcement of the presence of the Norwegian, title holder, and the Canadian was not the only good news of the day. The Gonet Geneva Open also announced the renewal of its agreement with the City of Geneva until 2025, and the arrival of a new sponsor, the Groupe Vaudoise. The support of the City of Geneva and the Groupe Vaudoise demonstrates that the tournament has become an established event and continues to grow.

Finally, the Gonet Geneva Open has chosen the Fondation Pacifique as its partner of choice for this 2022 edition. It contributes to a better understanding of the human impact on the oceans thanks to expeditions on two sailing boats, the Fleur de Passion and the Mauritius.

Thierry Grin was keen to point out that, as every year, other top players will be part of the event. The goodwill of promoters Ion Tiriac and Rainer Schüttler and the proximity of the French Open have allowed the Gonet Geneva Open to host players such as Roger Federer, Alexander Zverev and Grigor Dimitrov in the past.

Two-time winner of the tournament in 2016 and 2017, Stan Wawrinka will of course be welcome to return to Geneva. A wild card will be reserved for him if he changes his mind about not competing during the week of the tournament.

Marc Rosset, Sports Director of the Gonet Geneva Open, has also confirmed that the traditional pre-qualifying tournament will be held in Biel. Organized by Swiss Tennis, it will determine which Swiss player will receive a wild card into the qualifying draw.

A sumptuous final

A sumptuous final

The Gonet Geneva Open 2021 has a final that promises to be sumptuous. It will oppose this Saturday at 4pm Casper Ruud (ATP 21) and Denis Shapovalov (ATP 15) for a very undecided confrontation.

The Norwegian and the Canadian have never faced each other before. The No. 3 and No. 2 seeds in the draw will arrive perfectly “launched” for this first duel. Caspar Ruud is coming off two semifinal appearances in the last two Masters 1000 tournaments in which he participated, in Monte-Carlo and Madrid. As for Denis Shapovalov, no one can ignore the fact that he had two match points in Rome last week against the future winner Rafael Nadal.

Both men delivered perfectly in the semifinals. Casper Ruud won comfortably 6-3 6-2 over Pablo Andujar (ATP 75). The Valencian was the “executioner” of Roger Federer and Dominic Stricker on his way to the semifinals, but was unable to control his opponent’s forehand. He did not have a single break point in the eight games he played.

Denis Shapovalov’s task was not as easy. Against Pablo Cuevas (ATP 102), the left-hander really had to work hard to win 6-4 7-5. The Uruguayan had his chance in both sets before giving in to an opponent who seems to be on a mission this week on the TC Geneva courts. The Canadian intends to win the Gonet Geneva Open to pick up a second title after his success in 2019 in Stockholm. His problem is that Casper Ruud has the same ambition: to add a second line to his prize list after his victory in Buenos Aires in 2020.

Caspar Ruud: a fourth semi-final in a row

Will the fourth one be the right one! This Friday, Casper Ruud (ATP 21) will play his fourth semifinal in a row after Monte-Carlo, Munich and Madrid with the hope of going one step higher this time.

Beaten by Andrey Rublev, Nikoloz Basilashvili and Matteo Berrettini in the first three semifinals, the Norwegian hopes to overcome the Indian sign against Pablo Andujar (ATP 75). The son of Christian, a former Tour player who came to Geneva in 1993 to play in the Drizia Challenger, Casper Ruud can have great ambitions for this Gonet Geneva Open. Despite losing the first set to Dominik Köpfer (ATP 59) on Thursday, the man from Oslo is giving off a great impression on the TC Geneva courts. He won the title last year in Buenos Aires and feels he can hit the jackpot on Saturday and succeed Alexander Zverev as the tournament’s winner.

However, Casper Ruud will approach this semi-final against Pablo Andujar with extreme caution. The “tormentor” of Roger Federer and Dominic Stricker has shown this week that he can come from nowhere to turn a match in his favor. Beaten by the Valencian in 2019 at the Challenger in Prostejov but victorious last year in Buenos Aires in Act II of their duel, Casper Ruud knows perfectly well that he must not let his guard down at any time. Still alive after being down 4-2 in the third set to Roger Federer and then 6-4 3-1 to Dominic Stricker, Pablo Andujar also wants to believe that the Gonet Geneva Open can be “his” tournament.
