The Geneva Open tennis tournament to return with a new title sponsor

 

Geneva Trophy Promotion Sàrl, the company that has owned and operated the Geneva Open since 2014, is pleased to announce its partnership with private bank Gonet & Cie SA as title sponsor of what will now be known as the “Gonet Geneva Open”, which will next be held from 15 to 22 May 2021 at the Parc des Eaux-Vives in Geneva. This new partnership follows the withdrawal of the previous title sponsor announced in March.

 

Thierry Grin, tournament director, comments: “We are particularly delighted to be returning next year with a local sponsor with such a strong commitment to Geneva as Gonet Bank. We are beginning an exciting partnership with people who are passionate about sport and who want to contribute to the influence of the tournament.”

 

Classified as an ATP 250 tournament since 2015, under the umbrella of Geneva Trophy Promotion Sàrl, the Geneva Open is played in the unique setting of the Tennis Club of the Parc des Eaux-Vives in Geneva, offering a unique environment and conditions that make it one of the most popular tournaments among players on the European circuit. Its usual place in the calendar, the week before the Roland-Garros Grand Slam Tournament, ensures it attracts special attention from the tennis community. Recognised champions include two-time winner Stan Wawrinka (2016 and 2017) and Alexander Zverev, 2019 winner.

 

The Geneva tournament has a rich and memorable history, as it enjoyed a first incarnation from 1980 to 1991, also at the Parc des Eaux-Vives, with numerous prestigious winners including Björn Borg, Mats Wilander, Marc Rosset, Henri Leconte and Thomas Muster.

Geneva Trophy Promotion

 

Created in November 2014, GTP (Geneva Trophy Promotion SARL) has organised the Geneva Open since 2015. Five editions of the tournament have been organised and the sixth, scheduled for this May, was suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic which has closed the ATP Circuit since the beginning of March.

Alexander Zverev is the new champion of the Bank Eric Sturdza Geneva Open. The world No. 5 came out victorious with a superb showdown in the final. He won 6-3 3-6 7-6 (10/8) against Nicolas Jarry in a match interrupted twice by the rain.

Spectators were absolutely right to brave the elements. They watched a final which was likened to a real “thriller”. Alexander Zverev won on his fourth match point after discarding two. The scenario of this decisive match is why Nicolas Jarry could not hold back his tears after the final. The Chilean had actually made two errors on two match points in his favor, on a backhand and forehand volley, even though he had practically won the point.

Alexander Zverev succeeds the Eric Sturdza Geneva Open Bank at Thomaz Bellucci (2015), Stan Wawrinka (2016 and 2017) and Marton Fucsovics (2018). “I’m leaving Geneva with the title and new confidence”, rejoices the German who has also got “revenge” for his brother, Mischa, beaten two years ago by Stan Wawrinka in the final of the same Bank Eric Sturdza Geneva Open.

Oliver Marach and Mate Pavic have retained their crowns. Titled last year at the Parc des Eaux-Vives, the Austrian and the Croatian won 6-4 6-4 in the final ahead of the pair formed by the Australian Matthew Ebden and the Swede Robert Lindstedt. They stole the service of their opponents three times to conclude this final in 1h15.

Seeded No. 1 on the table, Oliver Marach and Mate Pavic plucked their sixth title, the first since their success last year in the same Bank Eric Sturdza Geneva Open. It will be remembered that the two men, victorious in the Australian Open in 2018, stole last year’s ATP race which crowns the best doubles team.

With this success in Geneva which was held onto by a thread – the pair were at the point of defeat on Friday in front of the Frenchman Fabrice Martin and the German Andreas Mies –, Oliver Marach and Mate Pavic arrive perfectly “pitched” for the supreme rendezvous of Roland-Garros.
