It is true to say that many American players are participating in the Banque Eric Sturdza Geneva Open tournament. The Americans came determined to impose their game and that’s what they did on Monday, May 21st: every American in the running won their match.
At the beginning of the day the young Jared Donaldson (21 years old) set the tone by beating Denis Istomin 5-7 6-4 6-0. Then it was the turn of his compatriot Tennys Sandgren to also inflict a bagel on his opponent of the day, the Austrian Andreas Haider-Maurer (1-6 6-1 6-0).
In the first night match of the week, spectators were treated to a one hundred percent American duel between Frances Tiafoe (ATP 61) and Ryan Harrison (ATP 56). The two Genevans achieved a great feat by eliminating the No. 3 seeded doubles pair formed by the Belarusian Max Mirnyi – six Grand Slam titles to his credit! – and the Austrian Philipp Oswald. Bellier/Nikles beat two players who won the title this year in New York and Houston 3-6 6-1 10-5. An undebatable win! Their precision in return and passing shots paid off in the end.

The first game of the main draw favoured Andreas Seppi. The Italian won his derby against Marc Cecchinato. Victorious 7-5 6-4, Seppi proved that the impossible is sometimes possible. He was down 5-1 30-0 on Cecchinato’s serve before winning the first set. Seppi admits “It’s true that such a scenario does not happen every day”.
